About Us

At Snowhill PONs, we believe the PON makes for the perfect addition to loving family homes of all types, whether bound for the show ring, agility course, obedience trials or primary companionship.

Nestled amongst the hardwoods of the central Piedmont region of North Carolina, you will find Snowhill PONs, home of AKC Grand Champion Polish Lowland Sheepdogs. Snowhill PONs was started as a labor of love to promote the unique traits and characteristics of this distinctive breed. All our breeding PONs undergo either OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) or Penn Hip testing as well as CERF (Canine Eye Registry Foundation) certification. Our goal is to not only maintain the finest representation of the PON standard and temperament, but also to accentuate what we believe to be their greatest attribute, their intelligence.

We were first drawn to the Polish Lowland Sheepdog, also known as the PON in their native Poland (Polski Owczarek Nizinny), by its striking appearance with a full mane of hair (yes, hair) and lack of a tail resembling a bear cub from a distance. Since the PON has hair instead of fur, it does not shed like most dogs and is hypoallergenic. The PON is also an ideal size at 40-50 lbs and 17-20 inches at the withers. However, perhaps the most endearing trait is its remarkable intelligence. The PON is a keen observer and quickly picks up purposeful behaviors such as opening closed doors and using its front paws as hands to catch a favorite toy or to swipe food from a counter or table top during a well-known PON behavior known as “counter surfing.” Their playful and sometimes, mischievous, antics will constantly amuse and amaze.
